How I Determined My Style

Before I really became confident in my style,  I was constantly influenced by other people, my job (Teen Vogue days were too bright, Harper’s Bazaar looks too girly and formal), and relied too heavily on trends I didn’t even really like.

I wore the chunky J.Crew chunky necklaces, had to buy embellished flats à la Tory Burch, wore the bright colored summer silks of the early 2010s but never really felt comfortable in any of it.

So what helped me eventually find my true style?  To be honest, influencers.

Scrolling through the styled looks I had saved on Instagram and Pinterest - there were 2 gals I focused on at first.  I loved the styling looks of Jacey Duprie of Damsel in Dior and Mary Lawless Lee of Happily Grey.  The perfectly accessorized images of them that I saved all had a common theme and were so different from how I was dressing.  I was saving all neutral tones (with maybe a touch of color here and there) in classic and oversized silhouettes, lots of denim, blazers, white tops, etc. - really all classic pieces with a hint of fashion and most that could be transitioned through seasons.

Being able to see in a gallery view of exactly what I wanted to look like and the style I wanted to emulate, made it easier to style my own pieces and helped me so much with closet cleanouts and future purchases.  Envisioning how a new piece would fit into the overall vibe I wanted to embody helped me to edit my online carts and fitting room pulls.  Even if I liked a new bag or skirt, if I couldn’t envision the piece fitting into my inspiration, and I couldn’t seamlessly wear it with my closet of classics, I came to the conclusion it would not be something I would consistently reach for.  Sure, some fun poppy pieces are always fun to play with (and I do still go for some!) but buying something I know is a statement piece vs. an everyday piece helps me understand its’ purpose in my wardrobe.

So what is my style?  My style is neutral, minimal, denim with crisp white shirts and delicate gold jewelry.  Sneakers with flowing midi dresses, silky skirts and oversized sweaters.  Polished blazers and skinny turtlenecks.  Denim cut offs and statement sunnies.  An elevated casual and with a touch of girlie glam.

It’s how I look and live everyday and has spread into all aspects of my life. My aesthetic and now the brand, & Sometimes Beige, is what drives my daily life and inspires my choices.
